Interview with Jay Equinox

Here is a wicked interview with Jay Equinox on the joys and trials of running a Record Store back in the day. You can find it on the rather fantastic blog SONIC RAMPAGE run by Pearsall (a man far more productive than me!).

Enjoy!

WHAT THE FUTURE SOUNDED LIKE

Interesting documentary about the birth of electronic music in Britain. Well worth a watch.

N R G Posse

A release on the classic D-Zone label. Can't remember what the A-side is called.... eveyone ignores it anyway and goes straight for the tune on the flip.
And what a weird tune it is!

A bleepy melody over BIG breakbeats with huge bass rumbles underneath. Tuneful, but nothing special going on.... and then a little squeaky voice comes in from nowhere 'Dirty Asshole! Fucking Jerk! Eat shit! Fuck You!'.

No reasons. No explanations.

The Final Word

Buy this potty-mouthed tune here :http://www.discogs.com/release/131411

UPDATE: Apparently 'The Final Word' was a little battery powered key-ring type of thing. You pressed a little button and it would whisper sweet expletives in your ear. So thats how the tune got its name, and where the samples came from.

Elementary my dear Watson, elementary.

TURNTABLE TERROR

A wicked little dutch number I picked up recently for a mere £3 and a right bargain it was! This is packed full of individuality, I love it. Out on the mighty Mid-Town records, this is THE label for classic early 90s dutch hardcore.

To quote one of the comments on discogs, 'Is it Hardcore, is it Rave, is it Breakbeat, who cares, this tunes makes you move as a dog covered with flees!'

It certainly does.

From the faux-metal guitar at the start, to the screaming diva vocals, to the catchy '2-3-BREAK!' sample this tune makes me jittery like a caffeine-addled kangaroo.

Turnable Terror - Break (Techno Mix)

I get the feeling this one might start getting played out a fair bit (depending on what circles you mix in I guess) so snap it up while its still cheap.

Hip House Documentary

A nice informative 10 min doc about the rise of Hip-House.

Its really good to see Fast Eddie doing his thing... watching this really surprised me how young he was at the time! He had already released Acid Thunder by this point....
I guess if you've got talent it will shine through no matter how old you are.
(I'm still waiting for mine to start - its at a dull glow at the moment)

ENTER THE HARDCORE

WRAP YOUR EAR-HOLES ROUND THIS!!!

What do you do when your construction/demolition droid goes beserk and starts smashing up the place!?!??

You stick this mix on and hope for the best!

2012

I'm sorry   - I've been away too long. If any of the regular readers are still out there - come back! I'm sorry!

Ok - last year was 2011. In case you hadn't noticed lots of things happened.
There was a war in Libya and Col. Gadaffi got smeared. Osama Bin Laden got assasainated by America and soldiers threw his bullet-ridden corpse flung into the sea. There were demos in London every week it seemed... from electricians to students. Public sector workers striked and 3 million of them walked past my window. Mark Duggan got shot and the youth protested nationwide be stealing trainers and burning down Greggs. It was fucking mad I tell you.

But probably the most important thing to happen in 2011 was the birth of a little-known blog in late September, and that blog is right here, before your eyes and entering your brain-banks right now.

You can find that blog here.

So thats 2011 summed up.Whats in store for 2012?

Well my friends, I have been busy.
I now present a weekly show on http://www.nu-rave.com/ every sunday from 2pm-4pm (GMT). I'll be playing the same kind of tunes that you can find in my blog, except with the added bonus of hearing my (weedy) voice.

Also, witness the birth of a new god: Distant Planet a wicked old skool night playing the best in underground old skool tunes, is happening on 25th Feb in London. This will be an on-going event so stay tuned. You can find more information on it here.

Its going to be an all-day party - so you can rave from the early afternoon till late at night! Hows that for value for money? Not only that, there is gonna be a rave quiz, so all you oldskool heads can show off your knowledge and win the CASH PRIZE. Check it out.

I have the honour to be playing at it and also the misfortune of being one of the organisers. So come along and say hi.
